In handwriting transcription, we have "diplomatic" transcription and "normalized" transcription. (And semi-diplomatic and semi-normalized....)
"Diplomatic" transcription tries to copy the text exactly, with archaic orthography and what-have-you.
"Normalized" transcription tries to make the text readable by a modern reader.
